Bennet Urges Action as Colorado Health Insurance Premiums Rise for 2027
Denver – As Coloradans prepare to choose their health coverage for 2027 starting November 1, Senator Michael Bennet reiterated his calls on Congress to take immediate action and pass legislation to lower health care costs. Coloradans are, once again, facing another year of sharp increases for health insurance premiums in 2027, even as state assistance helps cushion the costs for some in Colorado.
President Trump and congressional Republicans have failed to lower costs, instead allowing enhanced premium tax credits to expire. This manufactured crisis has resulted in entirely preventable financial hardship for Coloradans. In 2026, Colorado’s average marketplace premium costs doubled for hundreds of thousands. In 2027, approved premiums in Colorado’s individual market will increase by an average of 10 percent, and by 14 percent in the small-group market.
“As Coloradans choose their health coverage for 2027, they face tough decisions from rising costs. Marketplace premiums are increasing by an average of 10 percent, which comes one year after premiums doubled. These increases will force families to make difficult choices about what coverage they can afford while keeping a roof over their heads and food on their tables.
“President Trump and congressional Republicans made these choices harder by allowing enhanced Affordable Care Act premium tax credits to expire. I have supported legislation to extend these tax credits, but extending them alone is not the answer, it is only the most immediate step Congress can take to lower costs right now.
“Our health care system is broken. The United States spends roughly twice as much per person on health care as other wealthy industrialized countries, yet millions of Americans still struggle to afford coverage and care. These costs strain family budgets, hurt our economy, and force parents to worry about whether they can afford the care their children need. For Colorado families, we are moving backward after decades of progress toward more affordable, accessible coverage.
“Congress must act now to restore the tax credits and take broader steps to lower premiums, reduce out-of-pocket costs, and make prescription drugs more affordable. Coloradans deserve a health care system that works for them, not one that forces them to choose between their health and their financial security.”
